Stodolsky's law of organizational behavior

You can not overestimate people's stupidity.

Stodolsky's law of organizational behavior (circa 1979)

"The mediocre 'need' the really inept (Goode, 1967:11)."
Cited in Matejko, A. (1975). Dilemmas of hierarchical organizations and of industrial democracy.
Paper for the 2nd International Conference on Self-Management.

  1. This is related to a quote incorrectly attributed to Albert Einstein, "The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits."

He actually said, "The majority of the stupid is invincible and guaranteed for all time. The terror of their tyranny, however, is alleviated by their lack of consistency."
